Memory Recall

Dual N-Back Blitz

Track two streams at once and match what flashed N steps back.

What is Dual N-Back Blitz?

Dual N-Back Blitz is a fast memory game built around one tricky idea: hold two things in your head at once, and keep them moving.

Every few seconds a new stimulus appears. A block lights up in one of eight outer cells on a 3x3 grid, and a letter shows in the center cell with its own tone. Your job is to compare the current stimulus to the one from N steps back. If the position matches, call it. If the letter matches, call it. Both can happen in the same trial, so you track two streams in parallel.

The catch is that you are always remembering and reacting at once. The newest block becomes the thing you have to recall a few trials later. A round runs for 15 trials, and you can play solo Practice or go head to head against an AI opponent.

How to Play

Each round is 15 trials. A new block and letter appear every 2.5 seconds, so build a rhythm fast.

  1. Watch the grid. One of the eight outer cells lights up while a letter and its tone play in the center cell.
  2. Keep the last few stimuli in mind. You are comparing now against what showed up N steps ago.
  3. If the current block is in the same spot it was N steps back, hit Position Match (or press A).
  4. If the current letter matches the letter from N steps back, hit Letter Match (or press L).
  5. Both can match in the same trial. Call both when they do.
  6. Do nothing if neither matches. Each press is a toggle, so you can tap again to undo it before the next trial scores.

The first trial has no history to compare against, so input is locked. Just watch and load it into memory.

Scoring & Rules

Scoring is graded per trial. When the position or letter genuinely matches the stimulus from N steps back and you called it, you earn +1 for each correct call. Nail both in one trial and that is +2.

Miss a real match and you score nothing for it. Call a match that is not there, and that false alarm costs you -1. Pressing during the early trials, before enough history exists to form a match, also docks a point. Your score never drops below zero, so a rough patch will not bury you.

There is no lives system and no countdown clock. The trials are the clock. After all 15, the round ends. In a duel you win by finishing with a score equal to or higher than your opponent. Correct calls trigger a green spark, while a misfire shakes the board.

Strategy Tips

Skills It Exercises

Dual N-Back Blitz is designed to exercise working memory by asking you to hold a short, shifting sequence in mind while new information keeps arriving. Because a visual stream (block positions) and an auditory stream (letters and tones) run at the same time, it also challenges your divided attention and your ability to track two channels at once.

Comparing the present to a moment in the recent past is a focus task as much as a memory one. With practice you may get faster and steadier at this kind of tracking. It is a fun way to practice staying locked in while juggling two things, and the difficulty scales as your rank climbs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dual N-Back Blitz free?

Yes. Dual N-Back Blitz is free to play in your browser on Scotix. There is nothing to buy and no download.

Do I need an account?

You can jump into solo Practice mode right away. Ranked duels against AI opponents use an ELO rating, so a profile lets your results and difficulty carry over between sessions.

How do I get a higher score?

Only call matches you are confident about. Correct position and letter calls earn points, while false alarms cost you, so skipping a doubtful trial beats guessing. Naming positions and leaning on the letter tones helps you remember what came N steps back.

What does the N in N-Back mean, and does it change?

N is how many trials back you compare against. It scales with your ELO: 1-back below 1500, 2-back from 1500 up to 2000, and 3-back at 2000 and above. A bigger N means holding more in memory at once.
